Parades and Pisco: A Royal Celebration
Here at Old Queen Street, we’re perfectly placed in the heart of Westminster – just a stone’s throw from the Houses of Parliament and a short walk from both Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards Parade. With such a prime location, we’re an ideal spot for sightseers and locals alike to stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and refuel while soaking up the historic surroundings.
Proud to be surrounded by so much history, we’re always looking for ways to celebrate the age-old traditions taking place right on our doorstep – one of which returns this month!
A Regal Tradition: The History Behind Trooping the Colour
Each June, the heart of London becomes a stage for one of the most striking military displays in the world: Trooping the Colour. This ceremony marks the official birthday of the British monarch, bringing together precision, pageantry, and centuries of history.
The tradition dates back to the 17th century, when the colours (flags) of regiments were “trooped” before soldiers in battle, allowing them to recognise their own banners amidst the chaos. By the mid-18th century, the ceremonial version of Trooping the Colour had become an annual fixture to honour the Sovereign’s official birthday, regardless of their actual birth date – a practice introduced to ensure celebrations fell in better summer weather.
Today, Trooping the Colour features over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians. The King rides in from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade, saluting the regiments as they perform intricate manoeuvres in full ceremonial dress. It’s a stirring reminder of Britain’s traditions and one of the most photogenic days in the royal calendar.
