As spring blooms across Westminster and the days start to promise the arrival of summer, there’s no better moment to enjoy wines that reflect the season’s freshness and warmth.
At Old Queen Street, we never need much of an excuse to pour a glass (our wine list speaks for itself), but we’re happily raising one in celebration of National Wine Day this May. Our curiosity about the roots of this holiday took us on a fascinating journey: one that reveals just how deeply the month of May and wine have been intertwined through the ages.
The Origins
Supposedly, May Wine finds its roots in medieval Germany, where it was traditionally enjoyed during May Day celebrations – festivities that welcomed the return of spring. This seasonal wine was infused with sweet woodruff, a fragrant herb found in the forests of Northern Europe. This tradition speaks directly to our culinary philosophy!
Across the Atlantic
The custom made its way to the United States with German immigrants, especially in regions rich in German heritage. There, May Wine became a niche but cherished drink to toast the start of May.
Today’s Celebrations
Closer to home, National Wine Day is now officially celebrated across the UK on 25th May, and it’s a perfect reason (not that we need one) to enjoy a glass of something special.
Though we don’t have sweet woodruff on the menu, we do offer a selection of standout wines perfect for raising a glass to this age-old tradition.
Here are our top three picks that currently sit proudly on our menu:
Coates & Seely Brut Reserve, Hampshire, England, NV
This English sparkling wine is a testament to the finesse of Hampshire’s terroir. Aged on lees for four years, it unveils delicate aromas of orange peel and zesty citrus, intertwined with creamy nougat and freshly baked brioche. Its vibrant mousse and crisp finish make it an ideal companion for spring celebrations or a refined aperitif.
Domaine La Barbotaine Sancerre Rosé, Loire, France, 2021
Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir grapes in the heart of France’s Loire Valley, this Sancerre Rosé exudes elegance and minerality. Its delicate pink hue and notes of red berries and citrus make it a refreshing choice for al fresco dining or pairing with light spring dishes.
La Staffa Verdicchio, Marche, Italy, 2021
A bright and citrusy expression from Italy’s Marche region, this Verdicchio offers zippy acidity and a light to medium body. Its refreshing profile makes it a versatile choice – meaning it’s perfect as an aperitif or paired with seafood and seasonal vegetables.
