How to Make the Perfect Margarita
A classic Margarita is all about balance: tart lime, smooth tequila, and a hint of sweetness. It’s a signature favourite here at Old Queen Street, and we take pride in making the perfect Margarita every time. Read on to see how we do it…
Step 1: Prepare the Glass
Start with a fresh lime slice. Use it to wet the rim of a coupe glass, then dip the rim in salt. This step enhances every sip, balancing the drink’s bold flavours.
Knowledge Tip: A coupe glass is a stylish, stemmed glass with a shallow, wide bowl that exudes vintage charm. Its design dates back to the early 20th century and is closely tied to the golden age of cocktail culture. At Old Queen Street, we use coupe glasses for several of our signature cocktails, enhancing both their presentation and aroma. They’re also a fantastic choice for at-home dinner parties, adding an elegant touch sure to impress your guests!
Step 2: Mix the Drink
In a Boston shaker, combine:
- 50ml Tequila
- 25ml Triple Sec (or your preferred orange liqueur)
- 25ml Fresh Lime Juice
- 15ml Simple Syrup (made by dissolving 2 parts sugar into 1 part water)
Handy Tip: While we use triple sec, feel free to swap it for another orange liqueur of your choice, such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier for added depth.
Bartender’s Wisdom: A Boston shaker is the go-to tool for professional bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts alike. It consists of two parts: a mixing tin and a smaller glass or tin that fit together snugly. This design allows for efficient shaking, creating a perfect blend of ingredients while rapidly chilling the drink. It’s an essential piece of kit to ensure the perfect cocktail, every time.
Step 3: Shake It Up
Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously until the outside feels ice-cold – this is how you know you have broken the ice up enough to bring a refreshing chill to the cocktail.
Step 4: Double Strain
Double-strain the Margarita into your prepared glass. First, pour through a sieve to catch broken ice, then use a standard strainer for extra smoothness.
Step 5: Garnish & Serve
Garnish with a fresh lime slice, serve, and enjoy!
